Parlay Betting Explained
A parlay combines multiple bets into one ticket for a higher payout. All legs must win for the parlay to cash. This guide covers parlay math, when parlays offer real value, and the trade-offs between high-payout long shots and tighter favorites.
How a parlay works
Parlay decimal odds are the product of each leg's decimal odds. Two -110 legs combined produce a parlay around +264 (decimal 3.64). Three -110 legs produce roughly +595 (decimal 6.95). Four legs jump to +1228 (decimal 13.28). Use the parlay calculator to compute exact prices for your slip.
| Legs (all -110) | Parlay decimal | Parlay American | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 3.64 | +264 | 27.50% |
| 3 | 6.95 | +595 | 14.39% |
| 4 | 13.28 | +1228 | 7.53% |
| 5 | 25.36 | +2436 | 3.94% |
| 6 | 48.42 | +4742 | 2.07% |
Parlay variance
A 3-leg parlay at -110 each has a 14% chance to cash. A 6-leg parlay has 2%. Large parlays produce long losing streaks punctuated by occasional big wins. Most casual bettors lose money on parlays because the books' juice compounds with each leg.
The math: each -110 leg has 4.5% house edge. A 3-leg parlay has effective house edge of roughly 12.7%. A 6-leg parlay's effective edge approaches 25%. The same money bet straight at -110 carries one-sixth of the house edge of a 6-leg parlay.
When parlays make sense
- Correlated parlays where the legs are positively correlated (e.g., team to win + over the total in a game where the favored offense scoring helps both legs). Books usually price these as Same Game Parlays with reduced odds.
- Promo cycling: when a TN sportsbook runs a 50% parlay boost, the boost can flip a negative-EV parlay into positive EV.
- Small recreation tickets: a $5 weekend parlay for entertainment value is a fine use of disposable funds. Just don't expect it to be your edge play.
- Insurance promos: many TN books offer "parlay insurance" where one leg can lose and you get bonus bets back.
When to skip parlays
- If your goal is long-term profit, straight bets at -110 with line shopping beat parlays every time.
- Parlays of underdogs at +200 or longer compound the win-rate problem. Avoid 4+ leg parlays of pure underdogs unless you have very high conviction.
- Parlays of player props (where allowed) and team totals are often loosely correlated. Books charge for the correlation; you pay for it.
Same Game Parlays
SGPs let you stack multiple props and outcomes from one game. The book uses correlation modeling to price the slip. SGPs are unique to single games. See the Same Game Parlays guide for SGP-specific strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many legs can I parlay at FanDuel Tennessee?
FanDuel TN supports parlays from 2 to 12 legs on traditional multi-game parlays. Same Game Parlays support up to 12 legs from a single game's markets. Other TN books range from 12 to 15 maximum legs.
Do losing legs void a parlay in Tennessee?
Yes. In a traditional parlay, all legs must win for the parlay to cash. One losing leg voids the entire ticket and you lose the stake. Voided legs (postponed games, etc.) reduce the parlay rather than voiding it; the remaining legs continue to settle.
What is the maximum parlay payout in Tennessee?
Maximum parlay payouts vary by operator and event. DraftKings caps at $1 million per ticket on most events. FanDuel caps at $1 million on NFL and NBA. Smaller operators (Bally Bet, VIP Play) often cap lower. Always check the bet slip max payout before placing a large parlay.
Which TN sportsbook has the best parlay insurance?
DraftKings and FanDuel run weekly parlay insurance promos in NFL season, typically refunding one losing leg as bonus bets. BetMGM runs occasional parlay insurance promos. Insurance applies only to tickets that meet the promo's minimum leg count and odds threshold.
Is a Same Game Parlay better than a regular parlay?
Different products. Same Game Parlays let you stack props from one game using correlation pricing, which is more flexible but carries higher book hold. Regular parlays combine independent bets across games and are mathematically cleaner. SGPs are better for single-game conviction; regular parlays are better for multi-game stack value.
Can I cash out a parlay early in Tennessee?
Yes at most TN books. Cash-out lets you take a guaranteed payout before all legs settle. The cash-out price includes a 5 to 10% margin compared to the theoretical fair value. Bet365 has the most extensive cash-out menu in Tennessee, including partial cash-out on long parlays.
